COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This is a continuation of Part I, which is not required but highly recommended for an optimal learning experience. Click here to see Part I course description.

In Part II of this course, Dr. John Chen, a doctor in both Western pharmacology and Chinese Medicine will share clinical applications and safety concerns for conditions in the following herb categories: qi-regulating, blood-regulating, phlegm-resolving, tonic, liver-calming and wind-extinguishing, orifice-opening, and shen-calming.

Today's world – lifestyle and environment – is very different from what it was many years ago when Chinese herbs were first used as medicine. In response to the change, our bodies are trying to adapt and as a result, new patterns of diseases have surfaced. In addition, patients seeking acupuncture and herbal care may already be on a variety of western pharmaceuticals therefore it is essential that acupuncturists understand the fundamentals of possible herb-drug interactions prior to prescribing any herbal formulas for patients who are already taking western medications. Unexpected side effects from herb-drug interactions are a real and often devastating possibility. Ensure the safety of your patients and your practice with an understanding of possible herb-drug interactions. Dr. Chen will go over the safe and defensive practice guidelines to minimize side-effects, adverse reactions, and herb-drug interactions.

Upon completion of this course, practitioners will:

  • Understand traditional concepts and applications of Chinese herbs
  • Understand contemporary pharmacology and clinical applications of Chinese herb
  • Integration of Chinese herbology and western pharmacology to enhance therapeutic outcome, avoid herb-drug interaction risks, and improve overall communication with patients with other healthcare practitioners.
