When patients present with a history of angina, previous myocardial infarction, or cardiac surgery, the treatment must focus on enhancing coronary artery function and inhibition of atherosclerosis in addition to lowering lipids. Platelet and vascular adhesion inhibitors (VCAM-1) can help to prevent restenosis after angioplasty, stent, or bypass procedures32. Caution must be observed when prescribing anticoagulants such as Salvia (Dan Shen), Ganoderma (Ling Zhi), and Pueraria (Ge Gen) with pharmaceutical anticoagulants such as Coumadin, Plavix, or aspirin, due to potential drug-herb interactions33. Eleutherococcus (Ci Wu Jia) may not be prescribed for patients on Lanoxin/Digoxin/Digitalis due to interference with lab tests for drug levels34. Separating pharmaceuticals from the dose of herbs by several hours is the best practice to minimize the risk.
