HOW TO ATTRACT NEW PATIENTS
By Robert Doane, L.Ac.
For every practice there inevitably is the problem of how to attract new patients. Brilliance in the medicine alone will not create a large practice. This is because in this culture Chinese Medicine is so new and quite frankly the last medical modality that people think of when they have a medical or health problem. Usually we are the "door of last resort". This view will change but it will take some time. Consequently, we have to come up with ways to attract people to our practice. In my clinic we have solved this problem dramatically and happily by doing something that we love to do and something, which is very impressive to a potential patient. That something is "Jimmy Chang's Chinese Pulse Diagnosis." As we all know there are not many experts in this art and if there is, it is very difficult to get them to teach you. Dr. Chang has graciously been teaching his technique for many years and we find it amazingly accurate. I personally studied for several years the pulse diagnosis of Dr. John Shen and Dr. Leon Hammer and found it also to be effective. The only problem with that method, which also yields miraculous results, is that it simply takes too long to do (up to 40 minutes). In my clinic we see 95 people a day and such a method is virtually impossible. Dr. Chang's method is fast, fun, accurate and quite frankly deeply impressive to the patient.
I have been studying Jimmy Chang's Pulse Diagnosis method for several years and use it to build my practice. I used to give lectures and talks around the community but in the last two years we have found a much better way to attract people to the clinic. Every county in America has an abundance of fairs—health fairs, bridal fairs, rodeo fairs, summer fairs, etc. My staff signs our clinic up for all these fairs and we simple put up a table with some balloons and a big sign that says "FREE CHINESE PULSE DIAGNOSIS". In about 15 minutes someone will invariably ask what is pulse diagnosis and my staff will direct the inquirer to sit behind the table next to me to "read their pulse". Dr. Chang's method is anatomically based and is able to accurately spot all kinds of medical problems - kidney stones, gallstones, mitral valve prolapse, diabetes, upper and lower back pain, endometriosis, etc. Many people already know what is wrong with them and if you are able to tell them something they already know, and in some cases something only they and their doctor know, it has a profound impact on them. Whatever we find we ask the individual if they want that treated, and if they do, we set them up for a free 15 minute appointment to check out the clinic and ask any questions about their health concerns. At any given fair, over a 6 to 8 hour period, we sign up anywhere from 60 to 130 free consultations. The show success rate is about 85%. From August to October of this year we acquired 250 new patients from these free consultations. 90% of the people who come in for their free consultation go on to become patients. This is the power of Dr. Chang's Pulse Diagnosis method.
Do not for a moment think that you cannot do this. I have interns working for me that are now, after a few months, able to accurately read a pulse. The fun part about this approach to attracting new patients is that you get to practice your pulse diagnosis as well. What generally happens after the first pulse is read at one of these fairs is that the person will then go and tell everyone that they have to see the "pulse guy" and usually within an hour there is a continuous line of people in front of our table wanting to get their pulse read. Don't worry if few people come to the fair, as we generally sign up all the vendors as well for their free consultation. After taking hundreds of pulses at one of these events your pulse taking abilities will soar. TAKE ADVANTAGE OF DR. CHANG'S CLASSES. THEY ARE YOUR TICKET TO BUILDING A SUCCESSFUL PRACTICE.
