Infectious diseases are disorders caused by organisms such as bacteria, viruses, fungi or parasites. Although typically harmless, under certain circumstances, some organisms may cause disease. In Part I of this two-part series, Kimberly McMinn goes over public health theory, public health general precautions, public health history of pandemic responses, safety protocols used when treating infectious diseases, and ethical concerns regarding treatment during a pandemic.
