COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Autoimmune conditions can be complex to understand and challenging to manage, particularly when patients present with a combination of symptoms, laboratory abnormalities, and patterns that do not fit neatly into one diagnostic framework. This course provides a comprehensive look at autoimmune disease from both Western medicine and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), giving practitioners the opportunity to connect the two perspectives and develop a broader understanding of these challenging cases.

The course begins with an overview of how autoimmune disease has been understood and approached in both Western medicine and TCM. Participants will then explore three important autoimmune conditions: Rheumatoid Arthritis, Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE), and Type 1 Diabetes. For each condition, the course will examine the Western medical perspective, including relevant biomarkers, laboratory findings, and clinical patterns, alongside the corresponding TCM perspective and pattern differentiation.

Rather than simply presenting lists of symptoms or treatment protocols, the course will demonstrate how these different pieces of information come together. Participants will learn to recognize important laboratory and clinical findings, understand how they relate to the patient's presentation, and consider how TCM pattern differentiation can provide another perspective when developing an individualized treatment approach.

Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine strategies will be discussed within an integrative framework, with attention to how TCM care may be incorporated alongside modern medical treatment. The course will also address patient-centered considerations for supporting individuals living with chronic autoimmune conditions and navigating long-term care.

By bringing together biomarkers, lab results, Western medical perspectives, TCM patterns, acupuncture, and herbal medicine, this course offers practitioners a more complete way to look at autoimmune cases and understand how the two medical systems can inform an integrative approach.

Upon completion of this course, practitioners will:

  • Describe key Western medical and TCM perspectives on autoimmune disease.
  • Identify relevant biomarkers, laboratory findings, and clinical patterns associated with Rheumatoid Arthritis, SLE, and Type 1 Diabetes.
  • Differentiate common TCM patterns associated with selected autoimmune conditions.
  • Integrate practical, patient-centered approaches to support long-term balance and improved quality of life.
