COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This second day of training builds directly on the neurotransmitter and brain chemistry foundations established in Part 1, shifting the focus toward clinical assessment and individualized treatment planning. It begins with a review of core nutrition principles for brain health, followed by an exploration of the ethical considerations involved in working with eating disorder patients, establishing a framework for safe and responsible clinical practice.

The core of Day 2 applies the neurotransmitter model to disordered eating, examining how imbalances in serotonin, catecholamines, and endorphins, together with digestive dysfunction and inflammation, contribute to patterns such as overeating, restriction, and binge behaviors. This framework is integrated with Western diagnostic categories, including subclinical presentations, and translated into a practical clinical approach. Using questionnaires and clinical interviews, practitioners learn to identify dominant neurotransmitter deficiencies, prioritize treatment sequencing, and match targeted supplements to specific patterns, while also incorporating nervous system regulation strategies and reviewing safety considerations, risks, and real-world applications.

The course then expands into the full spectrum of disordered eating presentations, including compulsive overeating, restrictive disorders, and binge/purge disorders. Each is addressed through its pathogenesis, biological mechanisms, Western medical classification, and integrative treatment approach, including nervous system interventions, supplement protocols, contraindications, and case-based learning. The day concludes with pattern differentiation, supplement and drug interaction review, and comprehensive treatment planning to support clinical application.

Taught by Dr. Peter Shark, an experienced practitioner with over fifteen years of expertise treating complex and chronic illness using Acupuncture, Chinese Herbal Medicine, Functional Medicine, and Nutrition. Through his telemedicine clinic, Shark Holistic Health, he develops individualized treatment plans combining customized herbs, targeted supplements, and lifestyle interventions, and has helped patients across the United States improve symptoms, restore health, and enhance quality of life.

This is Part 2 of a two-part series. Part 1 covers brain chemistry foundations, Western medical treatments, and integrative strategies for depression, anxiety, and bipolar disorder.

Upon completion of this course, practitioners will:

  • Assess nutritional deficiencies related to mood, cravings, and compulsive behaviors using questionnaires and clinical interviews, and identify the appropriate order of treatment.
  • Apply integrative treatment strategies for compulsive overeating, restrictive disorders, and binge/purge presentations, combining supplement protocols, nervous system techniques, and nutritional interventions.
  • Understand the ethics of working with eating disorder patients and recognize clinical risks and contraindications to ensure safe and responsible practice.
  • Navigate supplement drug interactions and pattern assessment to build individualized treatment plans that support patient compliance without interfering with conventional care.
  • Strengthen clinical decision-making through real world case studies covering complex disordered eating and mood presentations.
