Supporting patients in grief has always been a large part of Dr. Melissa Monroe’s practice, but her understanding of grief became far more personal after she lost her 2-year-old daughter to Sudden Unexpected Death in Children in August of 2013. Since that time, Melissa has blogged about her healing process, founded an annual memorial concert called Agastock to benefit a local sliding-scale counseling center, accepted public speaking engagements about grief and healing, and continues to see grief patients each week in her Los Angeles clinic.

Through personal experience, Dr. Monroe brings you a course close to her heart on supporting grief: what it is, what it looks like, how to support patients going through it, and TCM treatment protocols. This course is part 2 and should be taken after Treating PTSD with Traditional Chinese Medicine.

Everyone will experience loss at some point in their lives, and while grief is a completely normal and natural response to loss, it can be difficult and frightening for patients to manage the grieving process and achieve acceptance. Complicated grief is defined as grief that becomes debilitating and does not improve with time. Having a deeper understanding of grief and the grieving process can help the practitioner better support their patients through loss of any kind.

In this course, Dr. Melissa Monroe will discuss the various stages of grief and how knowledge of these stages can help translate patients' patterns into TCM diagnoses and treatment options, what is complicated grief, the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) approach to grief, bedside manner and support, acupuncture and herbal treatment options, and lifestyle recommendations.

Upon completion of this course, practitioners will:

  • Have a deeper understanding of grief and the grieving process.
  • Be able to identify various stages of grief and how these stages apply to TCM patterns, diagnoses, and treatment options
  • Be able to better support the grief patient through acupuncture, herbal medicine, lifestyle recommendations appropriate to the patient, and active, empathetic listening.
