Today's world – lifestyle and environment – is very different from what it was many years ago when Chinese herbs were first used as medicine. In response to the change, our bodies are trying to adapt and as a result, new patterns of diseases have surfaced. Nowadays, patients are given medicated prescription drugs from their medical doctors which may not work very well, so they start to look for an alternative…a second opinion. This is where we, as Acupuncturists and Herbalists, come in.

Two common diseases today are allergies and autoimmune disorders. Dr. John Chen, a doctor in both Western pharmacology and Chinese Medicine and author of Chinese Medical Herbology and Pharmacology [1] and Chinese Herbal Formulas & Applications [2], will discuss the etiology and dynamic usage of Chinese herbs in treating these two common diseases.
