COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course provides a comprehensive look at the safe and ethical implementation of fasting protocols for patients with diabetes, weight management concerns, and other metabolic issues. Participants will explore how fasting impacts insulin, glucose, triglycerides, A1c, and key inflammatory markers, while learning which patients are appropriate candidates, which require caution, and which for whom fasting is contraindicated. The course also emphasizes proper referral practices and effective communication with medical teams.
This course focuses on the physiology of fasting, insulin dynamics, and mechanisms of weight gain and weight loss. Participants will learn to distinguish fasting from calorie restriction, understand how insulin resistance affects fat metabolism, and recognize the health implications of different fat accumulation patterns. Therapeutic fasting strategies, including intermittent fasting, extended fasting, and time-restricted eating, will be introduced. Additionally, participants will review foundational knowledge in patient intake and history, Chinese herbal support for diabetes and weight management, cautions and contraindications, relevant health issues to address prior to fasting, and basic nutrition guidelines to support patients safely throughout fasting protocols.
Upon completion of this course, practitioners will:
Evaluate the risks, benefits, and contraindications of fasting for different patient populations.
Understand the role of insulin in weight management, diabetes, and systemic inflammation.
Identify situations requiring referrals and collaborate effectively with other healthcare providers to ensure safe patient care.
Apply strategies to improve patient outcomes related to inflammation, diabetes, and weight management.
Implement fasting protocols tailored to individual patient needs.
