COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course begins with an introduction to Evidence-Based practice and an overview of the DSM-V perspective on Depression disorders. Following with the key biological factors of etiology in depression will be outlined. Next, an Evidence-Based practice model will be developed through the review of current and historically significant research on acupuncture and depression. After the research review, an Evidence-Based treatment template will be introduced and applied through case study analysis. At the conclusion of the course, one should be confident in having a strong Evidence-Based approach to treating depression with acupuncture. This will include the ability to discuss the biomedical effects of acupuncture treatment with specific details about the relevant biomarkers of depression and how to use this information in patient education.

Upon completion of this course, practitioners will:

  • Identify the basic diagnostic criteria for depression disorders according to the DSM-V.
  • Understand the biological factors in the etiology of depression disorders according to current biomedical standards.
  • Explain the basic mechanisms of action by which acupuncture can help alleviate depression symptoms.
  • Formulate an Evidence-Based treatment protocol using data from current peer-reviewed research articles.
  • Communicate effectively with patients and conventional medical practitioners using biomedical language.
