Postpartum Complications and Care: Differential Pulse Diagnosis & Herbal Treatment by Dr. Jimmy Chang

When it comes to postpartum care, the Chinese way is a bit different from what the Western world would do. For example, right after giving birth, Western doctors will recommend the new mother to get up and walk around but that is a BIG No-no in Chinese Medicine! Getting up and walking around can lead to infections and other complications.

In this one hour class, Dr. Jimmy Chang shares what he strongly feels is important for a new mother to do after delivering:

  1. Do not drink anything cold or use any cold water. Don't wash face or hands w/cold water. No salad. Just stay away from COLD stuff!!
  2. Drink warm water (even in summertime). The soup with wine may be too hard on kidney.
  3. Blow dry hair immediately after showering. In the old days, it was recommended not to shower but Dr. Chang says it's okay to shower, just dry your hair right after.
  4. Eat foods that create zinc. Make sure your body has enough nutrition. Sesame oil, chicken, ginger, soy sauce, & wine is also good for you - make it into a soup. Eat every 2 days. You will have a better quality of breast milk.

Dr. Chang goes on to share how to deal with blood clots and even shares a case study of a female patient who contracted an infection after giving birth in her hospital bed (I guess her baby really could not wait to meet Mommy!)
