Arthritis, one of the most commonly seen clinical disorders, is a complex disorder that may arise from and comprise of many distinct disorders, and affects patients at any stage of life. To effectively manage the symptoms and address the root cause of arthritis, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) practitioners must be able to accurately recognize and diagnose the various forms of arthritis.

This course is designed to give the practicing acupuncturist a working knowledge of various forms of arthritis, including how to make a differential diagnosis using physical examination, laboratory results, and X-ray interpretation. Dr. David Wells, an experienced practitioner with dual degrees in chiropractic and acupuncture, shares his wealth of orthopedic experience in this course. Dr. Wells discusses the treatment and recognition of various forms of common arthritic conditions such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, and infective arthritis.

TCM classifies most arthritic conditions as a Bi or pain syndrome. While most forms of arthritis is considered to be a type of Bi syndrome, not all forms of Bi syndrome is arthritis. The course also covers other types of pain syndromes such as myofascitis and fibromyalgia, their relationship to hypothyroidism, and their various other underlying causes.

Upon completion of this course, practitioners will:

  • Understand how to identify arthritic conditions and order appropriate laboratory and imaging for differential diagnosis.
  • Understand how to treat these conditions using acupuncture, herbs and dietary modification.
  • Understand myofascitis and fibromyalgia and their relationship to hypothyroidism.
  • Understand how to treat hypothyroidism using acupuncture, herbs, nutrition and lifestyle modification.
