COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Many patients experience persistent insomnia, anxiety, or depression that does not fully resolve with standard acupuncture or herbal treatments. These symptoms often reflect a deeper physiological disruption—specifically, an imbalance in Wei Qi (defensive qi). According to classical Chinese medicine, Wei Qi circulates 25 times on the exterior during the day and 25 times on the interior at night. This cyclical movement has profound effects on the brain-body relationship and plays a crucial role in maintaining healthy sleep architecture, emotional regulation, and overall mental health. When this flow is disrupted, the resulting imbalance can manifest as restlessness, emotional instability, and chronic psychological distress.

This course will explore how disturbances in Wei Qi circulation impact sleep and mood. The primary focus will be on the Qiao Mai (Motility Vessel) and Wei Mai (Linking Vessel)—extraordinary channels that regulate the movement of Wei Qi between the brain and body, as well as between our inner and external worlds. Understanding and treating these vessels can help address the root causes of insomnia, anxiety, and depression, providing effective solutions for restoring balance and supporting emotional well-being.

Led by Dr. Evan Rabinowitz, D.Ac., a seasoned practitioner and educator with over 25 years of experience, this course will provide you with clinically relevant insights and treatment strategies rooted in classical Chinese medicine. Dr. Rabinowitz is the founder of the Yao Shan Center for Chinese Medicine and teaches at Daoist Traditions College of Chinese Medical Arts and Georgetown University School of Medicine. His deep clinical expertise and teaching experience will guide you through the principles and practical applications of Wei Qi regulation, helping you bring lasting improvements to your patients' health.

Upon completion of this course, practitioners will:

  • Explain the 24-hour circulation cycle of Wei Qi and its impact on sleep architecture, emotional regulation, and mental health from a Chinese medical perspective.
  • Identify key diagnostic signs of Wei Qi dysregulation in patients presenting with insomnia, anxiety, or depression.
  • Understand the classical functions and clinical relevance of the Qiao Mai and Wei Mai in modulating Wei Qi circulation between the brain and body.
  • Design treatment strategies using acupuncture and channel theory and Chinese herbal medicine to regulate Wei Qi flow and restore balance between the internal and external aspects of the self.
  • Integrate classical concepts of Wei Qi physiology into modern clinical practice to support sleep, mood stabilization, and emotional resilience.
